Sheriff’s Scholarship Fund Eligibility and Selection
The Sheriff’s Scholarship Fund of the Hennepin County Sheriff Foundation will provide scholarship awards to full-time undergraduate students in the field of Criminal Justice who are enrolled or will be enrolled at an accredited two year or four year college, in Minnesota, according to the following guidelines:
Recipients of this award will be candidates for a two or four year degree in a field related to Criminal Justice. Selection will be based on an interview, essay, two teacher recommendations and a preferred GPA of 2.8 or higher. (Lower GPA’s may be considered and weighed with other application criteria.)
In recruiting students for this scholarship, the Foundation will give preference to children of Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office employees, special deputies, volunteers and other law enforcement personnel; and Explorer, Rebound and Boys and Girls Club participants.
Immediate family of the selection committee, board officers or directors or contributors to the scholarship fund of the Foundation are not eligible for scholarships.
Selection of the top candidates for the Sheriff’s Scholarship shall be the responsibility of the Selection Committee of the Hennepin County Sheriff Foundation who will forward top candidates to the Board for final awards. The Foundation reserves the right to amend the scholarship eligibility criteria at any time or withdraw an award prior to receipt if it is found that recipient is no longer eligible.
Awards of up to 50% of the cost of tuition and up to $2,000 will be made to at least two students if the candidate pool meets the criteria and as the fund balance allows.
Second year awards may be made if the student maintains the required contact with his/her Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office mentor, maintains a GPA of 3.0 and stays in the field of Criminal Justice.
Sheriff’s Scholarship Fund Application Instructions
Thank you for your interest in the Hennepin County Sheriff Foundation, Sheriff’s Scholarship Program. The scholarship awards will be in a range of $250 to $2,000. The number and amount of the awards will be based on the level of sponsorship and number of qualified applicants.
Deputy Bunton Memorial Scholarship, $1000
This scholarship is named after the late Jeff Bunton, a Hennepin County Sheriff’s Deputy who lost his life to pancreatic cancer at the age of 41. Deputy Bunton began his fourteen year career in law enforcement after serving six years in the Navy aboard aircraft carriers. The Deputy Bunton Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a military veteran pursuing a career in law enforcement.
Interested candidates must submit the following:
- Transcript from high school or college.
- Two letters of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or advisor.
- Completed scholarship application form with attached answers to essay questions.
The completed application and the supporting items listed above must have been postmarked no later than May 31, 2015.
